Note: I have updated the link ratios since the making of this video (to be even more conservative due to the Google Algorithm changes). You can find the new link ratios in the description below.

In this lesson I teach you how to properly structure a link building campaign in order to rank your website on the top of search engine results for several different keywords.

The specific lessons taught in this video are how to pick your anchor text for back links, the most natural looking link ratios for the homepage and individual posts, how to execute your link building campaign safely so Google doesn’t penalize your website, and how to track your back linking progress on an Excel spreadsheet.

Make sure you are logged into Udemy and signed up for the course before clicking the video below or you won’t be directed to the correct video (it’s completely free to register).

The proper link ratios for back links are as follows:

Homepage:
25% of links are the title of the website.
25% of links are evenly distributed amongst “blue” keywords and post titles.
50% of links are “naked links.” These will be things like “click here”, “read more”, “find out how”, http://YourWebsite.com, etc.

Individual posts:
20% of links are the post title.
20% of links are the target “blue” keyword.
20% of links are evenly distributed amongst related keywords of “blue” keyword.
40% of links are “naked links.” These will be things like “click here”, “read more”, “find out how”, http://YourWebsite.com, etc.

  1. Hi Mike. I’m confused by what you mean when you say vary the anchor text in the article and point links to it. Wouldn’t you just link the other articles on different websites to your targeted article on your main website?

    • Hi Kevin,

What I mean is that when you build backlinks to the article that you are trying to rank, make sure the anchor text you use is varied. For example, if you are trying to rank for “toaster ovens”, you would build links with anchor text “toaster ovens”, “oven toasters”, “best toasters”, “click here”, “click on this link for more info on toasters and ovens”, etc. That is what a natural link profile looks like.

  2. Hi Mike,

I’m getting a little confused as I try to set up links through the articles I’m submitting to article directories. From your info above:

    Homepage:
25% of links are the title of the website.
25% of links are evenly distributed amongst “blue” keywords and post titles.

Of the 25% of links that are evenly distributed amongst the blue keywords, are they supposed to link to the post we made for that blue keyword (in which case, we should also count that as a link to the individual post), or do we link to the homepage, using the blue keyword as anchor text?

In other words, you suggest linking to blue keywords when you talk about homepage links, and also linking to each blue keyword post, and I’m not sure what the difference is.

For example, in my resource box, I will write, “For more information about _________ (link to blue keyword post), please visit ____________ (link to homepage). Does that first link count as part of my 25% of links for the blue keywords on the homepage, or as part of my 20% of links to individual posts, or both?

Not sure I’m making myself clear, but I’m hoping you get what I mean anyway. 😉

    • Hi Lynn,

You want to link to both your homepage and your article using the blue keyword anchor text, but do it at different times from different articles (not to both from the same article with the same anchor text).

So in your example, if you were to use the same blue keyword anchor text for both, you would count them for both percentages (but don’t do that!). Use different keywords if you’re allowed two links within the same article.

Hope this helps clear it up!

  3. Hi Mike,

I am about to launch my first few sites thanks to your help! I was wondering what your thoughts are on adding meta tags. I have read different opinions on their use. Do you think they are necessary or useful? Also, how long would you say it takes on average for a page to get ranked?

Thanks so much for all of the helpful advice!

  4. I am reading a lot of articles about how SEO is changing due to Google’s new “Hummingbird” algorithm. Is link building less important in Google’s new ranking methodology? Any tips on how to keep up with the new changes?

    • Hi Peter,

All those ranking updates only affect the people who were much too spammy with their link building practices. As long as you’re conservative with your keyword-rich backlinks, you’ll be fine. Also try and get guest posts on websites within your niche (more than on web directories) and be a little more active with social media. Aside from that, all the principles are pretty much the same. 🙂

      Mike

      • Mike,

Thank you so much for the reply! Thank you also for all of the great education. I love the videos and reading the book on my Kindle.

        • No problem, Peter! And if you have the time, a review for my book on Amazon would be greatly appreciated! 🙂

          Best,

          Mike

  5. Hi Mike,

I Just finished your whole course on UDEMY! Mike I had a question about no follow vs do follow backlinks. Alot of people are saying that you shouldent focus on any backlinks that are no follow. Is this true? Should I still count no follow backlinks as backlinks on my excel sheet????

    • Hi Beck,

Google says that no-follow links don’t pass along any linkjuice, but in my experience, a good amount of no-follow links to a website will increase its rankings and authority. If I were you, I’d get no-follow backlinks in the mix as well (I wouldn’t count them on the Excel spreadsheet though, because I suspect they are treated differently).

      Best,

      Mike

  6. Hi Mike, You stated not to count no-follow backlinks on my excel sheet. However Mike, since I am writing in article directories such as HubPages and Squidoo, whenever I look at the code of the page it says that all my backlinks are no follow. This is also true with blog comments and forum comments. So mike, Is there really any way I can get 50+ dofollow links and count them on my Excel sheet (as you stated not to in the previous comment)? I am driving a fair amount of traffic from my article directories btw!

    • Hi Beck,

There are still several ways to get do-follow links as well (more than enough to fill out lots and lots of spreadsheets) – including MANY other directories that are do-follow. Even so, all those other places you mentioned are great places to get links from too (even though they are no-follow links), and they will still benefit your website (not just for SEO purposes, but for the direct traffic that you mentioned earlier). The important thing is to always be getting more links from more places as varied as possible so that your website continues to more up in the SERPs. 🙂

      Best,

      Mike
