  1. Hi Mike,
I’m am doing a bit of revision of your tutorials and have a question. Is it necessary to register with google businesses as you suggest at the end of this vid?

I registered with google businesses for the first website I created (ing) and after a couple of weeks I received a snail mail pin letter from Google Maps. I live in the most rural of rural areas and not sure what advantage I get from this, or am I misunderstanding something here or am I just asking a dumb question :-)?

    Thanks

    Linda

    • Hi Linda,

No worries…there are no dumb questions! 🙂

Registering with Google Businesses certainly isn’t necessary. It’s just something you need to do if you want to show up in Google Maps for your business. If showing up in Google Maps won’t help your business, then it really isn’t necessary.

  2. I was going to pay somebody to build my second paint contractor website. But with this website (Mike Omar’s) help, I got it done in one day while playing around the house.

Learned a lot in a few hours.

  3. Dear Mike, I bought the Earthly Touch theme, but when I downloaded it, the words earthly touch are still there and my title was gone. I have tried all I can think of to get rid of the Earthly Touch words on my home page, any suggestions? Thanks, Hal

    • Hi Hal,

It looks like for the title you’ll have to upload your own image and replace the default one (you can make one on cooltext.com for free). Also, there should be an option to have that area display text instead of the default image in the theme options. Also, as a member of Elegant Themes, you have access to their tech support team for issues like this. Let me know if you are able to figure it out!

  4. Chris Peterson says:

Great E-book! Read it all in a couple of days. Now I’m going through the lessons on your site and trying to work my way to at least the $5000 a month in passive or at least semi-passive income.
I’ve hit a road block when it comes to pictures for the site I’m currently working on. I’ve looked at istock, 123rf and a few others and most photos types I need are licensed for “editorial use only”. I need a few specific brand type (ie BMW motorcycles, Honda etc.) for the web pages. Where do you get these type of pictures that can be a fixed part of your site without copyright infringement coming in to play? Thanks for your help. You are making a huge difference in the lives of a lot of people!

    • Hi Chris,

Thanks for the kind words about my book! If you have the time, a positive review on Amazon is always appreciated. 🙂

As far as the images go, I bet you could find some good “creative commons” ones of the cars you need on Flickr (remember to give credit!). If you still can’t find what you’re looking for on any places that offer “creative commons” photos, let’s just say I wouldn’t get *too* concerned about where you get those photos from!

      Best,

      Mike

  5. Hey Mike,

Did you have your customers buy their domain and hosting accounts or did you buy it?

    • Hi Marcus,

I like to have the customer buy the domain and hosting account with their own information. This is so that once I finish the website, everything is completely in their hands and they are responsible for everything after that (having them calling you for things long after you’ve been paid is a pain in the neck!).

Also, you can refer them to my video lessons so they’ll be able to learn how to navigate their WordPress website and make updates on their own.

      Best,

      Mike

  6. I seem to be having a couple of problems with adding “social media button” and “Links” Do I use plugins to add “Links” and which of those should I use. I mean should I use “related Links.” Social Media Button – I’ve tried everything.

    • Hi Helen,

Unfortunately the new version of WordPress doesn’t have a “links” widget anymore. However, what you can do is add a regular text widget and then type in the links you want to add manually using HTML (just type into Google “HTML links” and it’ll show you how to write them).

As far as social media buttons, did you try downloading the plugin I recommended in the video? If that one doesn’t work, there are several other ones that work well too (just search “social media buttons” in the plugins section).

      Mike

      • I have also experienced difficulty with the social media buttons. I was able to download the plugin, but cant get anything to display on my home page. The menu looks exactly like the one in your video but nothing seems to work. Thanks.

        Sam

        • Hi Sam,

It looks like that plugin has compatibility issues with several themes and a lot of people have trouble with it. I’d recommend finding a different one that functions properly and doesn’t cause any headaches (my number one rule in this business haha).

          Mike

  7. Gotcha on the Links deal. I’ll try that OR just do without for a minute. The social media button, did something right because now it’s there.

  8. 2 more questions.
On the “contact form” when someone sends that form exactly which email address does it go too?

AND what happens to the previous post when a new one is made. I would like to keep all posts.

BY-THE-WAY THANKS SOOOOOOOOO MUCH for everything you have done for me. Free lessons. I am so happy.

    • Hi Helen,

You select which email address you’d like the messages to go to (within the settings of the plugin).

And no posts are ever lost, even when you write new ones. Where they are located depends on the setup of your website.

And you’re very welcome Helen! 🙂

      Mike

  9. does the “new verson” (which I’m not sure I have the newest version) also not have the widget for “buy now” because I don’t seem to be able to find it

  10. OK forget about that. There was no widget, I went to a few other sites and found the answer and now I have it! OMG

  11. Ok this is sorta – well unusual. I have 2 computers. I will call then comp1 and comp2. Comp1I made my website on I can actually “edit” my website even when I’m actually IN the site – NOT wp-admin. That’s kinda scary.

Then I have been struggling to get the paypal buy now thingy to work. I must have deactivated, deleted, restored, reactivated, etc etc. When I tried to test it (on comp1) I always got an error message “we were unable to decrypt certificate id”. Then I decided I would try it on comp2. IT WORKS!! However I have sent myself a test msg on the “contact form” a number of times so far I do not have that test msg in my email inbox or junk. Got any ideas Mike?

    • Hi Helen,

That’s really odd. Are you using different browsers on each computer? That might have something to do with it.

For the contact form, make sure you have the correct email address within the settings. That’s usually the main mistake people are making when it doesn’t work. Let me know if that works!

      Mike

    • Nope that wasn’t it. I’m still trying. The ads you are receiving from me is the one I have on the settings. HOWEVER, At first, before I did anything that ads went something like “[email protected]” I had no idea what that was all about but I did change it to the one you now have. Like I said I’m still trying. Thanks Mike

      • No problem Helen. A lot of times building out these websites can be frustrating because of random issues like these…but that’s also the best way to learn to use and navigate the WordPress software. Don’t give up!

  12. Mike – thanks for taking my random questions – I’m enjoying the free videos.

2 problems I’m having – I am also having an issue with paypal – it also comes up and says “we were unable to decrypt certificate id.” Any ideas about what I’ve done wrong?

2nd problem – Keyword Research – I’m not getting anything for free. I’ve watched the updated video (I think #7) and I don’t get the same free keyword search box. Everyone that I find wants me to pay for it. TKS and sorry to bother you with this.

    • Hi Patsy,

Try typing your error message from PayPal into Google and see what people are saying about how to fix it. That’s pretty much a guaranteed way to find a solution to those kinds of problems.

For using the Google Keyword Planner, Google now requires you to submit your credit card information to use the tool. But no worries, you won’t be required to buy anything at all. 🙂

      Best,

      Mike
